Dalam pameran teknologi CeBIT di Jerman, Intel mengumbar tampilan baru laptop murahnya, Intel Classmate PC. Apa keistimewaan yang ditawarkan?

Kini laptop yang ditujukan bagi para pelajar tersebut dapat 'berubah wujud' dari notebook konvensional menjadi tablet dengan desain putar 180 derajat, menyerupai Apple iPad.

"Ini (memang) bukan laptop termurah di pasar. Namun, jika Anda melongok berbagai fitur, ketangguhan, desain, dan software yang digunakan, ini menawarkan nilai besar bagi pasar pendidikan," klaim Jeff Galinovsky, Regional Manager Classmate PC, seperti dikutip detikINET dari Wired, Rabu (3/3/2010).

Classmate PC terbaru disokong dengan prosesor Intel Atom, dengan layar sentuh 10,1 inchi--lebih lebar dari versi pendahulunya 8,9 inchi--, hard drive 160 GB, kamera 1.3 MP, koneksi Wi-Fi dan WiMax. Daya tahan baterainya cukup lama, yakni mampu digeber hingga 8,5 jam. Ada dua pilihan sistem operasi yang tersedia, yakni Windows dan Linux.

Keistimewaan yang ditawarkan laptop ini adalah keyboard, layar dan touch pad yang anti air. Selain itu Classmate desain baru ini juga diklaim tahan guncangan dan anti gores. Dengan casing karet ber-handle, notebook ini dapat dijinjing seperti tas tangan.

Rencananya Classmate desain baru akan mulai dikapalkan kuartal kedua. "Hingga saat ini 2 juta Classmate PC telah digunakan di seluruh dunia," tandas Intel. ( faw / fyk )

Komputer berukuran kecil atau yang biasa disebut Nettop, memang kian digemari oleh masyarakat. Selain karena lebih ringkas, nettop juga lebih hemat daya jika dibandingkan dengan komputer desktop.

Salah satu vendor komputer yang telah menggelontorkan nettop di Indonesia adalah Manli. Lewat PC T1 series, produsen asal China itu memulai debut 'komputer mini' di Indonesia.

Jika dibandingkan dengan PC, maka nettop bakal jauh lebih ringkas dan juga lebih menarik. Bobotnya tidak lebih dari 1KG, dimensinya juga cukup mungil yakni hanya sebesar ukuran buku tulis.

Penampilannya juga tidak kalah hebat, produk ini dapat dioperasikan secara vertikal ataupun horizontal. Dalam paket penjualannya, produk ini juga disertai sebuah bracket agar dapat dioperasikan secara vertikal.

Minimnya tombol pada produk ini, membuatnya tampil dengan kesan minimalis namun tetap fungsional. Misalnya, pada bagian depan produk ini hanya terdapat 1 tombol power yang dipercantik dengan lampu indikator.

Untuk bagian atas, pengguna dapat menjumpai sebuah port USB dan slot untuk memory card, serta jack Mic dan output audio. Sedangkan bagian belakang makin diperkaya dengan 4 buah slot USB, VGA, LAN, dan yang paling mengesankan adalah penempatan port HDMI.

Penggunaan port HDMI seakan-akan mempertegas produk ini sebagai pemutar konten multimedia yang handal, terlebih lagi jika pengguna sudah menggunakan LCD monitor yang mendukung High-definition (HD).

Meski berukuran mungil, bukan berarti tidak bisa digunakan untuk memutar film dengan kualitas HD. Manli T1-B dipersenjatai dengan prosesor Intel Atom 330 berkecepatan 1,60GHz.

Meski menggunakan jajaran Atom, namun jangan dulu beranggapan performa produk ini layak disandingkan dengan netbook. Atom 330, miliki 'otak' ganda dengan dukungan hingga 4 thread sekaligus.

Jadi tidak heran, ketika digunakan untuk memutar film HD dengan resolusi 1920 X 1080, produk ini sanggup meladeninya dengan mulus. Bahkan film tersebut hanya menguras sekitar 20% beban prosesor.

Kualitas gambar yang tersaji pun tampil cukup tajam. Sebagai pasangannya, detikINET menggunakan monitor Asus VH226 yang telah mendukung resolusi hingga 1920 X 1080. Sayangnya, kartu grafis ION IGP9400 yang tertanam pada produk ini hanya sanggup menghadirkan bentang resoslusi 1600 X 1200 pixel.

Hal tersebut memang patut disayangkan, mengingat produk ini sudah menyediakan port HDMI serta kapasitas hardisk yang cukup besar untuk menampung puluhan koleksi film berkualitas tinggi.

Kenikmatan memutar film pun semakin terganggu karena tidak ada media optikal dalam produk ini, terlebih lagi Manli juga tidak membundling nettop ini dengan media optikal eksternal.

Dengan demikian, pengguna harus rela menyisihkan setidaknya 300-400 ribu untuk mendapatkan DVR-RW eksternal dari merk pihak ketiga. Sedikit merepotkan memang, mengingat produk ini diposisikan sebagai Home Theater PC (HTPC).

Nettop Manli PC T1-B, menawarkan sejumlah fitur yang cukup handal untuk dijadikan sebuah pusat hiburan. Bentuknya yang mungil, performa yang handal, serta konsumsi daya yang rendah, membuat produk ini layak disandingkan sebagai komputer pengganti desktop.

Ponsel anyar besutan Google, Nexus One, tak lama lagi akan meramaikan pasar ponsel cerdas di Indonesia. Ponsel dengan sistem operasi Android 2.1 itu coba dibawa masuk oleh Indosat. Kapan?

"Insya Allah, Nexus One bisa kami hadirkan paling cepat tahun ini. Kami masih melakukan pembicaraan dengan Google," bisik Group Head Brand Marketing Indosat Teguh Prasetya di sela Mega Bazaar, Jakarta Convention Center, Jakarta, Rabu (3/3/201).

Indonesia, menurut Teguh, dinilai oleh Google sebagai pasar yang punya peluang cukup menarik untuk melebarkan sayap bisnisnya, termasuk untuk Nexus One.

"Google sudah mulai terbuka dengan Indonesia. Buktinya, mereka telah membuka pintunya untuk Google Android Market," kata Teguh.

Technical Program Manager Developer Relation Engineering Google, Christine M Songco, mengakui Indonesia merupakan pasar yang menarik. Namun sayangnya, masih kurang dalam hal penyediaan konten lokal.

"Itu sebabnya, kami masih mempelajari dulu pasar di sini. Kami masih belum tahu strateginya seperti apa di Asia Tenggara, khususnya Indonesia," pungkasnya.

Mobile phones are getting more and more data-oriented, with the internet being commonplace nowadays… but the thing is, most people still use mobile phones for voice calls, most of the time. And it’s voice calls that clog up the network, and make your battery not last very long, according to Nokia-Siemens (who make and install cell towers).

So, according to IntoMobile, they’ve come with a solution. And it’s called CSoHSPA.

Ok, if you say that out loud, it may well sound like Yoda clearing his throat, but what it stands for is ‘Circuit-Switched over HSPA’. Except that doesn’t really tell you much, either, does it? Basically, what it amounts to is, instead of treating voice calls as separate to data, and giving them their own slot in the cell tower, it treats them as just another data call, as a series of data packets, going through the high-speed data signal. Nokia-Siemens are saying that with a simple software upgrade, that would give an increase in battery life, to users’ phones, of up to 50%.

That’s pretty impressive.

Of course, that’s where the market’s going anyway, and when 4G rocks up to the party, everything’s going to be on a data connection, with no dedicated voice slots. So, just maybe, this’ll be the perfect thing to get us all used to phones working that way. I do have to wonder, as well, whether it means that current 3G and HSDPA phones will then be able to use 4G cell towers. If so, then blimey, that’s going to make the rollout of 4G masts so very much easier! Of course, it doesn’t mean you’d be getting 200Mbps internet speeds on your Nokia N97, but it will mean they can get the masts in quicker, without worrying about phones not being able to use them.

Probably not the case, like, but it’s tempting to wonder what life will be like if Nokia-Siemens have already got that in mind…

Nokia looking to corner the market on cheap smartphones

With their Nseries of phones, Nokia were once the darlings of the smartphone world. Nowadays, though, despite the awesome power of the Nokia N97, they’ve slipped somewhat, compared to new upstarts like Apple and HTC. And so, Nokia have thought of a new strategy, according to IntoMobile. Nokia’s bread and butter business has always been the mid to low range. Entry level phones, and mid-rangers, that don’t have massively huge feature-sets, but do sell by the truckload.

So, they’ve come to the conclusion that what would be a brilliant marketing strategy is to make smartphones that aren’t top-enders like the Nokia N97, but that sit nicely in the mid-range.

Smartphones for the masses, if you like.

Or, in the slightly more sensible business words of Nokia CEO lli-Pekka Kallasvuo, Nokia “intends to expand by offering smartphones at lower prices to reach more consumers.”

That makes a lot of sense, when you realise how well the Nokia 5800 has s0ld… and when you consider just how bleedin’ gorgeous the Nokia E71 is (seriously, m’good buddy Wee Gary’s got one and it is proper nice… all slim and luvverly).

So, all in all, if you want a proper smartphone, but you don’t want to pay top dollar for one, looks like Nokia’s coming to your rescue!

phone coverage to extend

A story now, for all the extreme ironing fraternity out there (or whatever the next daft extreme sport is… probably extreme sneezing by now), as news has come through of mobile phone coverage to extend into an area where you wouldn’t really expect it to appear.

Or, in other words, the top of Mount Everest.

According to Tech Shout, the antennas use a satellite uplink to route calls back down to sea-level network, but on the ground (well, on the mountain, which is admittedly stretching the definition of ‘on the ground’ a bit), it’ll act just like a normal phone network. Although I’m presuming it’ll be a bit more resistant to cold, since I’d imagine it can raaaaaaaaaaaather nippy up Everest…

The masts they’ve put up can be used by both GSM phones (so any British climbers with something like a Samsung Solid will be sorted) and CDMA phones (so our American brethren, lucky people that they are, would be able to take a Palm Pre up there if they so chose), although I dread to think what the roaming rates’d be to ring someone from up on the roof of the world.

And although I joke, surely anyone can see the benefit of having them up there. If you’ve fallen down a 93 foot deep crevasse, it’s going to at least be a bit of comfort to know your ate who was actually looking where he was going can ring for help. Since, you know, there’s plenty of flat ground on Mount Everest, it’s just that most of its vertical…

And hey, if you take the Sony Ericsson Idou with you, just imagine the awesome photos you’ll bring back.

luxury phones get even more ludicrous

Ah, another day, another stupidly expensive phone with very little point to it. For every super-powered Nokia N97 that gets launched, there’s a low-powered but oh so delectable (allegedly) Vertu, and here’s another high-flyer to add to the list, this time hailing from Switzerland.

Called the Goldvish Revolution, it seems that it’s one claim to fame is the Swiss-made precision clock housed in the bottom end of the body.

Er, ok…

As for specs and features, well, I wouldn’t expect it to have a great many. The screen is tiny, and the exquisite engineering (which is a given, coming from Swiss craftsmen) just can’t hide the fact it won’t actually do an awful lot. And precisely what is the fascination with putting a mechanical clock in the body of the phone that seems to have affected so many luxury phones recently? Is the fact the phone has a clock on screen not good enough? I mean, come on, it’s guaranteed to make the phone both heavier and bigger, and, to be brutally honest, pull one of these bad boys out in town, and you’re going to look like an ostentatious git.

You really want an clock with hands, get yourself an HTC Magic, with an analogue clock on screen. Such a better phone. Oh, and you won’t have to pay upwards of £331,000 to own it!

Yep, you read that right.

THREE-HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE THOUSAND POUNDS!

For a phone…

Good job they’re only going to make 9 of ‘em in the entire world, then, really. My advice? Just but a proper phone.

Although if Vertu feel inclined to send me a phone to review, to prove me wrong, then I’ll be happy to let them…

Nokia E63 Review

About six months ago I bought the best phone that I have ever owned: a Nokia E71. Obviously this is a personal thing, since the E71 wouldn’t suit everyone’s needs or tastes, but for me it just fitted into every situation I put my phone in. It is the perfect messaging device, with it’s QWERTY thumboard that has excellent feel and feedback, it has outstanding battery life thanks to it’s enormous 1500mAh battery, it is as thin as possible without being uncomfortable to use, it has an bright, rich display, that while low on dimensions and resolution, looks absolutely great and manages to comfortably display web pages without issue. Then of course the fact that it looks so good in it’s stainless steel and chrome suit.

I wouldn’t call it outrageously priced either, since you’d be hard pressed to find something as compact, full featured and with such a quality feel in the same price range. While it may be good value (in my mind anyway), it is still out of reach of many who would like the functionality on offer, but aren’t able or willing to fork out the dollars that the E71 demands. Realising this, Nokia have produced a cut-priced version of the E71 called the E63, which manages to hold onto the majority of the E71’s feature set, whilst being priced considerably cheaper.

Sony Ericsson W995 and Idou

Mobile World Congress 09 - Sony Ericsson W995 and ‘Idou’

Anyone who remembers my coverage of the Mobile World Congress last year will know I got a teeny little bit breathless when I saw what Sony Ericsson were planning for the tail end of 2008 (i.e. the Sony Ericsson X1). I may as well warn you now, there’s every chance that this year, I may go from ‘breathless’ to ‘dead from asphyxia’.

Y’see they’ve announced two new mobile phones, and these two are about as high-end as it gets, especially the ‘Idou’. More on that mind-blowing beast of a phone in a sec, however…

First up is a phone that we can expect to see before then, the Sony Ericsson W995, aka/ the phone formerly known as Hikaru. The name alone should give away that it’s pretty high spec, but what you’re looking at here (and I can sum it up really easily) is a C905 with a Walkman badge on. Basically, they’ve taken the body and 8 megapixel camera of the C905, given it an LED instead of xenon flash (to decrease the thickness), and installed the absolute latest Walkman 4.0 music player. Oh, and shoehorned in stereo speakers. The Sony Ericsson W995 also includes all the WiFi, HSDPA, and GPS connectivity of its Cyber-Shot sister-phone, as well. Also, in a first for the Walkman series, it actually features a 3.5mm headphone jack, which people have been crying out for ages.

In other words, what we’ve got here is the most advanced and powerful Walkman phone ever made.

However… the W995 isn’t the star of the show, no matter high spec it is, because Sony Ericsson announced another phone. Many people have said that SE need to take back the top-end, take back the high ground of mobile phones, where they’ve lost market share to people like Nokia, HTC and Apple.

However, I don’t think anyone expected them to take it back in as much style as they just have done. Put it this way, when they said they had something special planned for this year, they weren’t effin’ kidding, because the Sony Ericsson Idou (which will get a proper name by the time it’s released) is just mind-blowingly, reality-alteringly awesome in every way; it’s so impressive that I damn near soiled myself when I saw it…

First up is the camera… all TWELVE MEGAPIXELS of it. Yup, the Idou is the first phone to break into double figures, becoming the UK’s first 12MP camera phone (well, first announced, anyway, someone else might beat them to release). But that’s not the only reason why it’s so stunning. Nor is it the 3.5 inch screen, or the keyboard-less, ultra-slim, iPhone-slaughtering design. All of those things count, but what’s really important is what’s inside…

Two words: Symbian Foundation…

Yep, this is the very first phone to use the brand new, completely slick and bleedin’ fabulous operating system that’s going to evolve fully into an open-source, world-conquering product. We finally get our first glimpse of what Symbian Foundation is going to be like, and frankly, despite my extreme enthusiasm for it, and saying it would both change and rule the world, the fact is… I wasn’t enthusiastic enough! Essentially, what I’m saying is, think Nokia 5800 but SO very much nicer…

Make no mistake, what we’re seeing here is the future of mobile phones. And that’s why the Sony Ericsson Idou is without doubt the star of MWC 09.

Put it this way, never mind the Palm Pre, I reckon I’ve just found my phone for next year…

After the massive revelation about the Sony Ericsson Idou (the world’s first Symbian Foundation phone, that includes a 12MP camera), this morning, it’s going to be rather hard for any of the other manufacturers to top Sony Ericsson. However, Samsung are having a chuffing good go, with their newly announced flagship phone, the Samsung Omnia HD, also known as the i8910. Oh, and there’s the Beat DJ, as well, but it’s the Omnia HD that’s the big one to watch out for.

Now, you may be wondering why that is. In fact, you’re probably thinking, “Whoa, hang on, they’ve nicked the HD bit off the HTC Touch HD.”

Well, the two letters, yes, they’re the same, but the reason behind the two letters isn’t. The Touch HD simply added them on for marketing value, to underline the size of the screen and make it sound cool. And that was fine. With the Samsung Omnia HD, though, there’s another reason, and its because, simply, the Omnia HD is the first phone in history to be able to record HD-video. And that means that for the first time ever, you’ll be able to record video, with a phone, at the kind of image resolution and quality that you get on things like Blu-ray discs.

Hmm, ok, I’ll concede that does give the 12MP Idou a run for its money. Still can’t top the fact that beastie runs what will evolve into Symbian Foundation, though…

Oh, and I shouldn’t need to tell you the Omnia HD is the sequel to the existing Samsung Omnia.

Second in the Samsung stable for 2009 is the Beat DJ, or the M7600 as it’s sometimes known. This is an entirely different animal, centred around music. Well, it would be since it’s got Bang & Olufsen gubbins in it, like the previous F400. It’s also packing a 2.8 inch touchscreen, and a unique, DJ-ish, turntable-inspired “Disc UI”, with an onscreen deck to scroll through, er, stuff. Other than the fact the music will sound brilliant, and it’ll have a 3MP camera, that’s pretty much it for the Beat DJ. Looks nice, though, if a little, well, bulbous.

Well, Sony Ericsson and Samsung have had the spotlight this morning, now it’s time for HTC to get in on the act, with follow-ups to two of their recent masterpieces. Yep, it’s time for the HTC Touch Diamond 2 and Touch Pro 2.

Good job the specs are a bit more inspiring than the names!

What we’re, in fact, looking at here is something closer to the HTC Touch HD. Gone is the tiny 2.8 inch screen from their predecessors, to be replaced a 3.2 inch screen, running at 800×480 pixels. Or, if you like, just over half an inch smaller than the Touch HD. As per usual for HTC’s Windows Mobile phones, these two new siblings are going to be running TouchFLO 3D, although it’s said they’ll be running a brand new version of TouchFLO, which should make them even slicker than their predecessors.

Both phones have also had their memory upped on them, topping out at 512Mb ROM and 288Mb RAM. In terms of cameras, though, there’s a bit of a difference, as the Touch Pro 2 get a 3.2MP snapper, while its more consumer oriented sibling gets a whopping 5MP with autofocus.

Of course, the other massive difference between the two is the Touch Pro 2’s full QWERTY keyboard, which this time appears to also lift up, like it did on the old TyTN II, to give a better viewing angle on the screen. You know, like the Nokia N97 does, as well.

Meanwhile, with these now being not that far off the Touch HD in terms of screen size and spec, god alone knows what the follow-up to the Touch HD will look like!

Bill Gates bans iPhones for his kids, no-one is surprised, Completely unsurprising news, now, from the pages of The Register, where they’re reporting that Bill Gates has put a blanket ban on his kids (or his wife, for that matter) owning either an iPod or an iPhone.

What that’s you say? The former CEO of Microsoft saying that his family can’t have things made by Steve “I’m Bill Gates’s arch-nemesis” Jobs? Surely not!

You have to admire the way people are saying that his kids should have some say in whether they get an iPod or not, without first researching the subject and finding out that his kids are, in fact, aged approximately 13, 10 and 5, and therefore, will get what they’re given, and lump it. They should think themselves lucky they don’t get a lump of coal and half an orange each at Christmas! And as for his wife, Melinda, she is quoted as saying, “Every now and then I look at my friends and say, ‘Ooh, I wouldn't mind having that iPhone.”

Yikes, in the house of the former CEO of Microsoft, that be banishment talk, surely?

But hey, the iPhone is and always was a triumph of style over substance, and quite frankly, there are a lot of phones that’ll outclass it (and if we’re talking just Windows Mobile, have the Toshiba TG01 as an example, for starters…). Of course, there’s always the possibility some might argue that Windows Mobile is a triumph of substance over any kind of style whatsoever, and in a way, they’re right.

That’s fixable by adding on a new interface, just like the did with the HTC Touch HD (and I know I’ll get flamed to a crisp about this, but can people please stop saying Windows Mobile is still rubbish, even with TouchFLO on? Actually use one, then try to convince me it’s rubbish…)

Can you fix the iPhone’s shortcomings by adding a new camera on, on top?

Anyway, I’m straying away from the central point of my ramblings here, which is this: er, it’s his house, and the kids are all under 13. No they can’t have a say in what gifts they get bought. That’s the parents’ job.

Besides, with a dad who’s worth in the region of $58 billion, and who could probably ring up HTC and say, “Make me a brand new version of the Diamond, NOW,” and who is making a multitouch, touchscreen table, I don’t think they’re exactly gonna come off badly out of the dea.

Acer to corner the market on cheap smartphones

Interesting news from the world of Windows Mobile, now, as according to a story on The Register, Acer may be about to corner the market on cheap smartphones. As in really cheap smartphones. As in Windows Mobile phones that cost less than €49 (about £43)…

Er. Crikey. When you consider that my X1 costs in the region of £500, sim-free, that’s really quite an astonishing price.

It seems the phones, the Acer C1 and E1, going to be punted direct to the networks, who’d very possibly put their own branding on, in the same way that the T-Mobile G1 is actually made by HTC. Either way, though, that looks to be a startlingly cheap price for a proper, fully-fledged smartphone. Not only that, but Acer have confirmed they’ll come with Windows Mobile 6.5, the newest, slickest version, which given the price, is even more surprising. Unlike the vast majority of smartphones out there, they’re also saying the C1 and E1 will come in a range of different, funky colours.

So, with things like an improved user interface, and flashily-painted bodies, it gives us a bit of an insight into exactly what these two Acer phones are.

The words “My First Smartphone” are merrily rushing towards my lips…

And that’s a brilliant idea, in principle, there’s no doubt about that. If you want to get users to jump from cheap feature phones to smartphones, what better way to encourage them to do it than to make a smartphone cheaper to get than a feature phone, right? And yes, that is a brilliant idea, but… I can see a potential problem.

Take a look at the Toshiba TG01. It’s uber-powerful, and unless something pops up in the meantime, it’ll be the most powerful Windows Mobile phone in the world when it’s launched, with that stupidly fast 1GHz processor. I’ll bet you any money, though, that it comes in at a similar price to my X1, sim-free. Power ain’t cheap.

So at about 43 quid, which implies a much lower cost to make them, how powerful, exactly, can the Acer C1 and E1 actually be?

I really hope they can stick some serious power in them, even at that price, because Windows Mobile needs a lot of processing guts to make it a nice, usable operating system. I really hope the low price doesn’t compromise that, because I really want these phones to succeed. I’m genuinely excited about seeing what they’re like, but… well, they may be many people’s first smartphone, but unless they’re really nice, they might end up being many people’s last smartphone, as well.

Everyone who owns an iPhone consistently makes large with the praise for the App Store, saying how they can get any software they want (and to be fair, it is pretty cool). It’s the same with the T-Mobile G1, and its Android Market. But now, they’re not the only ones in on the fun, because now, there’s an app store for all the Blackberry phones in the world, according to MocoNews.

Well, the ones with the right firmware, anyway.

But essentially, all the ingredients are there. It’s an over-the-air download service, that lets you instantly buy and install any software you like onto your favourite fruitily-named mobile phone, running the gamut from games to social networking tools, to actual, useful business tools, to an intriguing app that RIM say will “channel your inner rock god.”

No, you don’t win anything for saying a mobile version of Guitar Hero, because that’s what I’m betting on, too…

Ooh, that’d be pretty cool on the multitouch screen you get on the Blackberry Storm…

Either way, it’s yet another indicator that the days of Blackberry phones being simply business devices for people who spend entirely too much time working, are long gone.
It’s also going to be a big win for another company: PayPal. Not only is the billing system run by them, but it seems that you actually have to have a PayPal account to even use it. Still, given that even my dad has a PayPal account, I can’t see that being much of an issue.

You know the best thing, though? The name that’s been given to their online app store service is the single best bit of one-upmanship I’ve ever seen in the mobile world. Apple may have an App Store, Google may have the Android Market, but what have RIM gone and called their service?

You may well remember that one of my favourite new phones at the Mobile World Congress was the little i-mate Centurion, a truly dinky, credit card-sized device that somehow managed to fit in Windows Mobile, a QWERTY keyboard and about as much processing power as my Sony Ericsson X1.

Yes, I need cash, because I want one.

Well, the same company have announced something else rather cool, as well, with the i-mate Legionnaire, according to Engadget Mobile. On the face of it, it’s a pretty standard Windows Mobile phone, with the ol’ touchscreen interface, and keyboard-less design of something like the Toshiba TG01. But here’s where it gets interesting. It does have a keyboard…

It’s just not actually attached to, or part of the phone…

What it actually has is a second device, the i-mate Warrior, which is best described as a 10″ netbook PC. Only it’s not, really, it’s a vast, powerful accessory for the Legionnaire. Basically, you slot the Legionnaire into the Warrior (oo-er), and instantly your phone becomes the guts of a laptop PC. And its touchpad, as well. So, in essence, you get yourself a netbook-sized laptop, but what’s powering it is actually the phone.

Now that’s intriguing.

I can see the argument against it, because it means carrying two devices about with you, but let’s be honest, how many people already do that nowadays, with a mobile phone and a separate laptop. Lots and lots, I’d guess. So, why not combine the two? It’s Windows Mobile, so it’ll do a fair amount of the stuff your normal laptop’d do (and definitely things like Word and Excel). Just imagine you’re on the train home from work, looking at t’internet on your phone, but decide you want to send some emails. Slot the phone into the laptop-y jacket-y thing, and do it on a full-size keyboard. And then keep browsing on the page you were looking at on the phone, which is now showing on the big 10″ screen. And when you’re done, unplug them, and carry on browsing on the phone.

New Study texting helps improve literacy

The age old conflict over the English language, with so many grammar bores stating categorically that texting and the like are causing declining standards in literacy and the English language is dying. Of course, the fact that the English language is an ever-evolving beast doesn’t factor into their heads, but hey. These are the same people who say that swearing shows you have a smaller vocabulary and lower intelligence, usually just before I launch into a tirade of abuse that shows them precisely how big my vocabulary is, and how many ways I have of expressing my dislike for them…

However, if a new study quoted by The Register is to be believed, the grammar bores of the world may very soon have to shut up, because it’s now been suggested that texting, and using abbreviations like LOL, OMG, and STFU (one for the grammar bores, right there) actually help increase kids’ literacy.

Now, granted, it was only a small study, but the fact is, it found that of the kids studied, the ones who text regularly had a better reading ability, a larger vocabulary and more phonological (I love that word) awareness, than those who didn’t. Of course, it might just be that they’re brighter kids all round, and the thickos stick to shorter words they know, but one never can tell.

Take me personally, for example. I use abbreviations all the time, if I’m texting or on MSN. Just ask my mate Diana, I’ve had to explain some of the stupid shortcuts I’ve come out with in the past. And that’s because, despite being a wordsmith, I’m inherently lazy. And it really, really bugs me when people go on these ‘crusades against txt spk’, filled with some kind of self-righteous vim and vigour.

Just stop it. Please. What exactly is wrong with using lol to show you find something funny? It’s quite considerably easier than typing ‘oh, I am laughing most heartily, huzzah‘, even if you’re using a QWERTY phone like the Palm Pre, or Nokia N97. It saves time, and, ooh, it really annoys grammar bores!

Besides, it’s insulting, not just to me, but to kids using txt spk, to suggest they can’t use any other form of expression. Just because someone types lol, doesn’t mean they can’t type the long-drawn out version, it just means they made a conscious choice not to. And besides, considering how these people say we have to protect the children as they’re our future in one breath, and then in the next, say exams are getting easier and that they’re all illiterate morons, I think we can safely disregard their opinion.

I say we set them a challenge. Get a full touchscreen phone like the Nokia 5800, or even a traditionally keypadded-up phone like the C905, and try typing out ‘oh yes, most humorous, your witticism has made me fall over to the ground laughing until my bottom has fallen off‘.

HTC Magic gets manhandled

HTC Magic gets manhandled, is really quite sexy, I argued, when the T-Mobile G1 was launched, that it wasn’t the perfect phone. You may well remember. The design was a bit… well, not that pretty, and despite the Android operating system, I wasn’t a massive fan of the phone. However, you may also remember that I said the G1 wasn’t a make-or-break device for Google Android, and that it was future phones that were actually the exciting ones to look out for.

Phones like the second HTC Android phone, the HTC Magic.

Well, thanks to Engadget Mobile, we now have some more pictures of it being manhandled, and my incredibly accurate prophecy is coming true, ’cause the HTC Magic is really quite lovely. The main reason for it looking so much better than the G1 has to be the fact it’s keyboard-less, being more akin to the HTC Touch HD in design. And that means it’s thinner. However, they’ve also changed the surface texture, giving it a glossy finish, instead of that ever-so-slightly odd matte finish on the G1.

Overall, the reason I like it so much is because… well, it feels like a modern phone design, whereas the G1 always felt a tiny little bit like an old design they’d taken out of the ‘not used’ bin, and applied to the first Google Android phone.

Oh, and that sliding screen on the G1, the way it used to kind of swing out, not slide in a straight line, always got on my nerves for some reason…

Of course, in terms of software between the two, they’re both functionally identical, except for one big difference, in that the HTC Magic runs a new development called ‘Cupcake’. Or, to us mere mortals, it has an onscreen keyboard, with the makers having realised that a phone without any way to enter text and numbers is a bit rubbish, since the G1 didn’t have a software keyboard, and neither did ‘pre-Cupcake Android’.

All in all, then, I reckon the HTC Magic (and you just know the one in the pic is begging to be called the Black Magic… now that’s a cool name…) is a much more enticing phone than the G1. I’m not quite as excited about it as I am about the Palm Pre, and I’m nowhere near as excited as I am about the Sony Ericsson Idou, but this is definitely one to keep an eye on!

UK Networks to remove Skype

One of the cool features you’ll find on a fair few modern mobile phones is Skype. It’s even had an entire phone named after it (no prizes for guessing it was the 3 Skypephone)! However, it’s not the only phone to have this well-known VoIP service built in, because Nseries phones are getting in on the action, too, most notably the Nokia N97, where Nokia plan to have it linked in to the contacts, so you can Skype someone (snigger, that still sounds rude to me), straight from your phonebook.

There may just be a tiny hiccup in that plan, though, because it doesn’t sound like the UK networks are particularly happy about that, according to IT Pro Portal…

Most vocal in their criticism have been O2 and Orange, and when you think about it, it’s easy to see why they’re kicking up a stink. If you’re making calls through Skype, then you’re not making normal voice calls, and they lose the revenue they’d make from you making normal voice calls. Theoretically, that could lead to them deciding not to sell the Nokia N97, which, let’s remind the world, is already generating massive amounts of buzz before it even goes on sale.

Meanwhile, T-Mobile are being smart, and thinking the same as I would (and this is where I reckon O2 and Orange are missing out on a trick). Sure, you may get a hit on voice calls, but just look at Three: they have the Skypephone range as one of their key products, and what having Skype built in actually seems to do is make for more loyal customers, who spend more through your network!

It’s an interesting battle that’s shaping up, and I can’t wait to see how it plays out. On the one hand, the networks want to maximise the amount of money they can from people, and don’t want Skype screwing their profits. On the other hand… the Nokia N97 is one of the most anticipated phones ever, and surely any network would be daft to not sell it!

Ooh, an interesting Catch 22, there. I’m intrigued how this one’s gonna play out.

Not long after Barack Obama won the election to become the 44th US President, there was a whole debate going on about whether he’d be allowed to keep his beloved Blackberry, since it seemed unlikely he’d be able to (no previous President had a mobile phone, due to it being a matter of national security). Well, according to Mobile Crunch, we have our answer. President Obama WILL be keeping his Blackberry!

He just won’t be able to use it for official business, which is fair enough, because it’s no different from me using a Sony Ericsson X1 as MY phone, and having a W950 as my work phone.

Criminal ‘not-at-all-a-Mastermind’ steals top secret prototype phones from Sony Ericsson :

Now here’s a story you don’t come across every day, courtesy of the Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog. Anybody who keeps their ear to the ground knows that you sometimes see leaks of upcoming mobile phones on the net. Well, a man from Sweden has gone one step further, and taken it upon himself to steal a big, hefty load of prototype phones from Sony Ericsson themselves.

Oh, and when I say a big, hefty load, I mean about £61,000-worth!

Quite apart from wondering how the hell big the guy’s overcoat was to fit all those mobile phones underneath, one has to question the thought process that went through the guy’s head. I suspect that if his brain had gone into second gear when he was planning his little caper, it should have, really, come up with this train of thought:

“I know, I’ll nick a load of phones from Sony Ericsson, and get some of their prototypes, that SE fans will go nuts over, but that none of the other manufacturers will want to buy off me, and that I’ll not be able to fence before the police catch me and Sony Ericsson tear me a new one…”

Yes, genius plan there, Mr Swedish Criminal. There’s no report on what mobile phones were nicked, obviously, since Sony Ericsson’ll keep that very close to their chest, but if they were prototypes, logic dictates they’d be of interest. Also, there’s no report on what the police said when they found the haul, but if it didn’t include the words “whoa, look at that, 12 megapixels!” I’ll be severely disappointed.

Of course, while I can’t condone what the thief did, and think that he’s a complete numpty for even contemplating it, I’d have killed to see what mobile phones were in his haul. Next year’s successor to the Sony Ericsson X1, maybe? Or perhaps the 12MP successor to the Sony Ericsson C905 that you just know they’re going to make? Perhaps even the SE Android phone that’s surely on its way?

Tell you what, I’d have killed to be one of the arresting officers, I’d have got to pepper-spray someone, hit them repeatedly with a nightstick, possibly taser them, and see next year’s mobile phones…

The top five reasons why the Nokia N97 will rock :
You’ve probably noticed this in the past (and trust me, you’ll continue to notice it in the future), but here at Mobileshop, when we see an upcoming mobile phone that we really like the look of, we want to shout about it to the whole world. Especially me. Seriously, I have co-workers here, who’ve considered gaffer taping my mouth shut.

Well, if you’ve seen this blog recently, you’ll know there’s one phone in particular, due out later in the year, that I reckon looks raaaaather nice. So nice, in fact, that I seem to remember using the phrase ‘the canine’s conkers’ to describe it, since that was the only phrase that seemed to do it justice. It is, of course, the Nokia N97.

It seems I’m not the only one who’s excited about the Nokia N97, due to a post on The Nokia Blog, where the writer lays out very simply why it’ll be brilliant (well, and the 5 things that could make it not be good, but that’s by the by). And you know what? I agree with his main argument, which is very simple (despite the name of the post - ‘5 reason not to buy the Nokia N97′ - and the fact he points out reasons it could fail):

The Nokia N97 is one flagship phone. It’s five flagship mobile phones, all in one. So, if you want the top 5 reasons why the Nokia N97 will rock the kasbah (and it will):

1. Nseries-esque hardware (incredible camera, GPS, super-fast web).
2. It’s the new touchscreen flagship, picking up the baton from the Nokia 5800.
3. It’s taking over as the new Ovi Portal flagship.
4. It’s picking up and going with the N-Gage baton, making it a top-end handheld games console as well…

…and since I want to be different, for my 5th reason…

5. Just look at it. Honestly, if this thing were a car, then to quote a Mr J. Clarkson, it’ll snap knicker-elastic at 50 paces…

One thing I do have to do, though, is refute the list of reasons why you wouldn’t buy it (not just because I’m argumentative… well, ok, a bit because I’m argumentative). Sure, there all valid concerns, about things like whether the battery life on the Nokia N97 is up to the task, whether it will have an iPhone-esque App Store, and whether it’ll let you use one login for all parts of the Ovi and N-Gage portals, without continuously logging in… but I’m going to share my thoughts on it, which I can sum up in one sentence…

No-one will care, they’ll buy it on the name, and the looks, and the hardware/touchscreen.

None of those 5 reasons not to buy the phone will stop people actually buying it, I predict, least of all Nokia fans. And if I’m wrong, well, you can dip me in sulphur and call me Susan…

Chrysler and Fiat announce merger

Today’s most important news is, no doubt about that, the announcement of Chrysler and Fiat’s merger, a move which might have a lot of influence on the auto market. Chrysler, faced with serious financial problems, still managed to sell about 2 million vehicles last year (most of them in the United States), while Fiat, whose main markets were Europe and Latin America, sold around 2.5 million units. So the result of the merger will be one very important company.

Fiat, who will receive an initial 35 percent equity interest in Chrysler (with an option to raise it to 55 percent at a later date), won’t make a cash investment or funding in Chrysler instead it will share platforms with the Detroit carmaker, including city and compact segment vehicles, fuel efficient powertrain technologies and will also help Chrysler expand their market outside of the United States.

“A Chrysler/Fiat partnership is a great fit as it creates the potential for a powerful, new global competitor, offering Chrysler a number of strategic benefits, including access to products that compliment our current portfolio; a distribution network outside North America; and cost savings in design, engineering, manufacturing, purchasing and sales and marketing,” said Bob Nardelli, Chairman and CEO of Chrysler LLC.

BMW 320d Winter Concept by Miranda-Series :

Though there’s not much left of this winter, German tuner Miranda-Series announced a very good looking winter sport package for the BMW 320d (the current generation, but the version before the facelift). By optimizing the ECU, the tuner managed to increase the 2.0 liter turbo diesel’s power output up to 199 hp. Handling was improved by equipping the car with Eibach Pro-Street-S coilover suspension and Stop-Tech brakes. Other changes include new 19-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in Dunlop winter tires and new Recaro seats. However, there’s one small setback. The package, though it looks good, it’s not that impressive, but instead is priced at €13,544 (almost $18,000), which is a lot.

Volvo pulls out of the Tokyo Motor Show

Last week Ford, along with GM and Chrysler, announced that it would skip this year’s Tokyo Motor Show and now, Volvo management has decided to follows it’s parent company and drop out of this year’s edition of the Japanese show. The reason behind the decision was the costs cut, the Swedish carmaker having better things to do with it’s money that to have a stand in Tokyo.

Fearing a lack of participants, JAMA (Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association) even considered, last week, to cancel this year’s edition of the Tokyo Motor Show. However, the decision was that “the show must go on”, especially with the association receiving support from the Japanese companies, who announced they’ll be at the show, scheduled to take place between October 23 and November 8

First Dodge Viper special Hurst edition sold for $275,000

In order to celebrate their 50th anniversary, Hurst Performance Vehicles released a special 50 units limited edition of the Dodge Viper, and the first car was auctioned two days ago at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction for $275,000. The anniversary Hurst/Viper features an unique gold paint finish with gloss black stripes and black chrome Hurst wheels. Also, the car is fitted with the new Hurst HARD-DRIVE gold anodized pistol-grip shifter, 19- and 20-inch Hurst polished aluminum wheels, Corsa exhaust and Moton Club Sport adjustable coil-over suspension with Eibach springs.

The interior was also customized with special Katzkin charcoal leather with Hurst embroided logos, gold thread detailing and perforated leather inserts. For the exterior there are two color combinations available: black with gold stripes and white with gold stripes (the gold with black stripes combination was specially created only for the first auctioned unit).

Chris Bangle leaves BMW and the auto industry

Chris Bangle, Chief of Design for BMW Group and one of the most famoust and controversial characters in the auto industry, has announced today that he will quit his position at BMW and that he will leave the auto industry altogether to pursue his own design-related endeavours. Bangle has been BMW’s Chief of Design since 1992, after working for Opel and Fiat too.

With his designs appreciated by many and hated by even more, one thing’s for sure, Bangle is one of the most infuential designers in the past two decades. He completely changed the ‘face’ of BMW and other car makers were also influenced by his designs. And considering that, starting with 2006, BMW is the world’s largest premium car producer, surpassing Mercedes Benz, we might say that the did a good job and, hate it or love it, his decision is a loss to the industry we all love.

BMW has announced that they’ll continue to use Bangle’s current design cues at least through 2010 and that his post will be taken by the company’s current Head of BWM Automobile Design, Adrian van Hooydonk, who has worked closely with Bangle for the past 17 years. BS3 based on the Audi S3

O.CT Boehler Concept BS3 based on the Audi S3

German tuning company O.CT Tuning released the first details and photos of another package for the Audi S3. Called Boehler concept BS3, the car is based on the quattro version of the S3, powered by an upgraded engine that delivers 328 hp (241 kW) and a maximum torque of 425 Nm. The power upgrade was made by fitting a a specially developed Engine control unit, deep thorated Sportexhaust with integrated Controlfolds and improved Air Intake System. According to O.CT, the BS3 has a top speed of 265 km/h (165 mph) and it goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) “almost a full second quicker than the Stock S3″ (which does the sprint in 5.5 seconds).

Other upgrades include a fully adjustable O.CT Coilover Suspension, 8-piston braking system with 372 mm discs/rotors and O.CT Carbon Fiber Add-ons for the engine, battery and air intake. Last, but not least, the body kit looks very good, with widened fenders and redesigned rear bumper, finished in white and black paint, plus a set of 20 inch MÖZ alloy wheels.

The only downside of this package is its pricing, around 67,000 Euros, but the fact that the car will only be built in a limited run of 100 units, O.CT hopes to find customers for it.

The 505 hp Chevrolet

If you ask someone to name a Chevrolet car that delivers more than 500 hp, we bet they’ll tell you “Corvette!”. But oh boy, they sure would be wrong! Because a team from Fourdin Auto Sport, led by Yves Fourdin, have created this monster, a Chevrolet Matiz powered by a 505 hp 7.0 liter V8 engine from the Corvette Z06 (come to think about it, those people saying Corvette wouldn’t be so wrong). We have no idea how they managed to fit the V8 into the little Matiz or how the car doesn’t take off, but one thing’s for sure, the Matizilla goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds, to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 10.94 seconds and up to a top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph).

The racing car, which was finished in August 2008, has been homologated and is currently on display at the International Racing Show Liège in Belgium. One more photo and a short video of the car unleashed on the Monza race track in Italy, after the jump.

Unprecedented Phone Blows

Toshiba TG01 - unprecedented phone blows EVERYONE’s minds :
Long time readers of our blog will know that whenever I see a mobile phone that I really like, I tend to gawp at it a lot, and generally act like a complete fanboy for a while. I’ll warn you now, expect that to happen in this blog post, because the Toshiba TG01, as shown on Pocket Lint, is truly, utterly, staggeringly gorgeous.

Seriously. Just look at it. It’s taken me about 4 hours just to stop ogling it for long enough to actually write about it. But why is it, when you get right down to it, so special? Well, first off, take a look at the Toshiba TG01’s screen. Notice anything?

Yep. It’s huge. Actually, no, it needs a new word, to properly describe its size. It’s hyoooooooooj!

Coming in at a truly vast 4.1 inches, it neatly stuffs every other mobile phone on the market, even the HTC Touch HD (which is sure to annoy me ol’ mate Matthew, who justifiably loves his HD to bits). And that’s no mean feat considering that the screen on the HD ain’t no slouch. The Toshiba TG01, though, really is something else. Sure, the phone is physically bigger because of it, but it’s all screen, which’ll make typing on it incredibly easy, and watching movies just epic.

However, there’s something else rather exciting about the Toshiba TG01, and that comes from the other dimensions of the phone. Ok, it may be long and wide, but it’s also incredibly thin, coming in at just 9.9mm, making it officially, as far as I’m aware, the thinnest Windows Mobile phone ever made. Well, you’ll see what I mean in the pics below (also courtesy of Pocket Lint), where, when it’s viewed from the side, you can barely see it!

There’s no word yet no what the other specs will be, and Toshiba have sneakily not put the megapixel count on the camera in the promo pics, but I’d bet 3 megapixel, if I had to. Or maybe 5, at a push. As for software, it runs on Windows Mobile 6.1, with a bespoke interface, meaning it really is angling after the Touch HD’s top spot. Same resolution as the HD, too, coming in at 800×480 pixels. Which translates as: ‘you watch, some enterprising soul will port TouchFLO over to it, like they did with the Sony Ericsson X1.’

Oh and it even appears that you can change the CPU speed on it, to either pump up the power, or save it when your battery’s low. Now that is one gorgeous and clever bit of kit…

iPhone vs. Nokia N97

Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen, to the ongoing grudge match that is our iPhone Killers series! And this time round, the iPhone has all to play for after it’s beating by the Nokia 5800. It left that fight with its nose bloodied, and now it’s time for it to try and reclaim its crown.

However, that might prove to be a bit difficult for it, because today, the iPhone takes on its toughest challenge yet…

After the massive interest people were showing in the 5800, it was only natural that Nokia would take their brand new touchscreen operating system, and build it into an Nseries phone. After all, the 5800 was only ever meant to sit in the mid-range. Another phone was destined to take up the top-end, and that phone, as if you hadn’t guessed, is the phenomenal Nokia N97.

Ohhhhhhhh yes folks, the iPhone really has its work cut out for it here…

1. How useful is it for doing actual work on?

The iPhone’s proved in various face-offs that it’s actually pretty good at being a useful tool for doing something productive, with an ace email client, a superb web browser, and downloadable Office software from the App Store. But the thing is… the Nokia N97 can do all that really well, too, which pretty much ruins any advantage the Apple wonderphone may have had. Add on the fact that the N97’s got a really rather spiffing QWERTY keyboard, and the fact that the screen opening at an angle lets you type on it like a mini-laptop, and it’s clear right away that the Finns are going to take this round…

Winner: Nokia N97

2. How good is the phone for mucking around and not doing any work on?

Ooh, again, the iPhone faces a tough challenge in an area it should dominate in, just like it did with the 5800. Only this time, it could potentially lose the round in an even bigger way. Sure, it has the App Store and iTunes, but the Nokia N97 has the Ovi Portal and N-Gage gaming, which evens things up nicely. Bu the Nokia N97 has a 16:9 widescreen for watching videos and movies. And double the memory of the biggest iPhone, to store more of your stuff. And it supports Flash, for viewing websites you just can’t view on the iPhone. And, therefore, it wins, hands down.

Winner: Nokia N97

3. How many opportunities for showing off to my mates will the phone give me?

Since the iPhone beat the 5800 in this round, it’d seem logical that it’s also going to beat the Nokia N97. But the thing is, y’see, it doesn’t. The iPhone may do gaming, but so does the Nokia N97, and what it lacks in multi-touch, it makes up for in sheer screen size for playing on. And whilst the iPhone has Youtube, so does the N97, and the N97 can do Flash, instead of the lower quality format mobile Youtube shows its vids in. So, it looks sharper, it has better sound through the stereo speakers, and I reckon it’s a prettier phone too. So, the N97 wins!

Winner: Nokia N97

4. How easy is it to use the phone to cheat at pub quizzes?

No contest, here. The iPhone may have a super-slick web browser, but so does the Nokia N97. The iPhone may now come with 3G data, but the N97’s got broadband-esque HSDPA. Admittedly, both have WiFi, but unless you know the landlord’s password, that’s not a great deal of use. But there’s one thing the iPhone hasn’t got, and that’s a honking great QWERTY keyboard. You can argue all you want about the merits of the onscreen keyboard, but the fact is, the physical keyboard on the Nokia N97 beats it in every possible way, making trying to find answers on Wiki much, much easier. The N97, once again, is victorious.

Winner: Nokia N97

5. How good will I feel using it, and how GOOD will I look using it?

Hmm, this last round is actually a tough one to call, because, whilst the Nokia N97 is a nicer looking phone, and whilst it has that superb keyboard, the new Symbian interface is, whilst being good, not as slick as the iPhone’s. But then, to mitigate against that, the Nokia N97 is a lot more powerful. It’s a very close match-up, making it really difficult to pick a winner, but the fact that the N97 doesn’t have the flicky-scrolly, inertial-scrolling menu-things isn’t good. And I do like flicky-scrolly, inertial-scrolling menu-things. So, grudgingly, I have to concede that the overall satisfaction of using the iPhone is marginally better.

Winner: iPhone, just

And the winner is…

Oh dear. Anyone who hoped for an iPhone win, after its defeat at the hands of the 5800 is disappointed yet again, as it turns out that Apple snobbery, as shown by every single Apple fan in existence is no match for the sheer power of the Nokia N97. Once again, the Cupertino Kid has to go home with its nose in a sling, as the N97 is (using the formula competitor score divided by iPhone score times 100) 400% as good as the iPhone. It’d better rest up again, because its next competitor is one I’ve blogged about before, in direct competition to the iPhone, and it’s one that soundly kicked its bottom last time: the HTC Touch HD…

Learning Mobile Phone For Kids

Time for something a bit different, since it’s Friday, and you’re all, I’m sure, getting ready to let your hair down for the weekend. If you’ve got kids, do you find they tend grab your mobile phone and start mashing random number, before accidentally dialling your mum, the Chinese takeaway place, or the police? Do you need a mobile gadget that’ll keep their hands off your phone?

Well, you’re in luck, because the LeapFrog is making its way over to the UK, according to Pocket Lint. It’s a mobile phone for kids, but before anyone quotes back what I’ve said many times in the past (that kids shouldn’t have, nor do they need, phones), it’s not actually a real phone. Still, it’ll keep ‘em for getting marmite-y fingertips all over your new Nokia 5800, and that’s main thing, really.

So, if it’s not a phone, what is it? As the title suggests, it’s a toy phone. Well, if we’re being honest, it looks like it’s a toy version of a Blackberry, if the designer had eaten too many Sherbet Fountains…

Or possibly Wham Bars…

Internally, though, it’s quite a clever little thing. It appears that the LeapFrog’s got a virtual dog called Scout living inside it, and the kid using it can text message that dog, and learn things (that’s possibly the weirdest sentence I’ve ever typed). So it that not only gets kids used to texting and using a full QWERTY keyboard on a mobile device, but it teaches them… well, alright, granted, I don’t actually know what it teaches them, although I’m guessing I won’t be too far off if I say it might be something like the average episode of Sesame Street. Or, in other words, what it actually is, is this:
Hmmm, the Sony Ericsson Speak & Spell has a certain ring to it. I’d probably stop short of suggesting the Nokia Stretch Armstrong, or the Samsung Big Trak, though…

Still, like I say, it’ll keep their grubby little paws off your mobile phone, and that’s the main thing, right? So, whether you got an HTC Touch HD, or a Nokia 1000, grab the LeapFrog, and your kids’ll never accidentally call the police again!

Plus, added bonus, it’s the size of a small country, so if anybody tries to nick their tuck shop money, they can brain ‘em with it…

After the Zumba phone, that you control with your voice comes a brand new innovation, this time from Korean manufacturer, Pantech. This time, though, it’s not your voice. Nope. According to Cnet Asia, this particular phone technology lets you control your phone by, erm, blowing on it.

Hmmm, ok…

Well, to be fair, it’s not just about controlling the phone by blowing on it, the whole system is actually called the Emotion Engine (oddly, the same name as the chip in the PS2), and brings a couple of new control methods to the party. First up is a feature letting the phone’s camera recognise movement, and so tell when the phone’s moving without needing an accelerometer, like you’d get in something like the Nokia 5800. Ok, granted, Sony Ericsson have talked about doing something similar for ages, but Pantech have pulled it off first.

Next is a part of the system Pantech call the ‘camera engine’. This would work by using the camera on the back of the phone, and by you waving your finger (or a ’stick’, it says in the source article) in front of that camera. The phone picks that up, and replicates it on screen, giving you a virtual proddy, pokey finger, controlled by your own waggling in front of the cam.

Finally, we come to the ‘blow engine’, the bit where you control your phone by blowing on it. Well, on the mic, technically, where you’d speak into normally. It’s said that the phone can recognise the difference between you blowing on it and the actual wind hitting it, and when you think about it, it’s actually quite a cool, if mental, idea. Imagine things like being able to turn off the phone by ‘blowing it out’ like a candle. Or maybe a sailing game where you blow to make your boat move.

That’s even more innovative than the pinchy motion iPhone users love, I’d say!

We’ve reached the stage where it’s nearly hardwired in, especially since they’re not just the preserve of businessy types, nowadays.

Who’d have thought, when we saw those little blue and black email boxes (which weren’t exactly what you’d call pretty, let’s be honest), back in olden times, that they’d grow up and evolve to become the svelte beauties RIM (Research In Motion) populate the Blackberry range with today!

So, with their march into the consumer world continuing (Storm, and Bold, anyone?), there’s a new version of one of their business arena stalwarts, that takes the classic Curve series, and makes it all… well… gorgeous. Taking a definite design cue from the Bold, the Blackberry 8900 has a similar sweeping QWERTY keyboard, and the same ’stretched out across the whole front’ style of the four navigation keys. But then, the general shape of it is more like a hybrid between the between the previous Curve and the Blackberry Storm.

The question, though, is that with the Bold and the Blackberry Storm on the market, both of which are arguably (well, in some people’s opinions; more on that in a sec) better looking than this version of the Curve, why would you want to get a Blackberry 8900? Well, the answer comes from the Curve heritage it’s picked up from the 8310: ease of use. Yes, the Bold and the Blackberry Storm may have marginally better looks (and even that’s debatable, depending on your taste in phones), the Blackberry 8900 is the most satisfying to use. The gaps between the keys make the keyboard FAR nicer to use than the Bold, and although the Storm’s touchscreen is innovative (what with being a moving, clicky screen), it apparently makes your thumbs hurt by being an absolute pig to press down on.

The Blackberry 8900, meanwhile, looks good, and keeps the essential ease of use that’s always been present in Blackberry’s Curve line (which, I reckon, was always far nicer than the Pearl series). Or, in other words, if you want a phone to do email on, the Blackberry 8900 is the canine’s conkers…

Nokia E71 - the hidden gem in Nokia’s range of mobile phones

It’s always the flashy phones that get the publicity, isn’t it. Consider Sony Ericsson; the X1 Xperia and the C905 get all the hype, while the W902, possibly the best Walkman phone ever made, gets none of it. It’s the same with Nokia, too. Phones like the N96, N97 and 5800 have got loads of people shouting, to the point where other phones don’t get a look in.

Which is a shame, really, because having had a play with the Nokia E71, today, it’s one of the nicest phones I’ve had a go on in absolutely chuffin’ ages!

Now, I know what you’re thinking; it’s a Blackberry, innit. Well, yes, it does share some design traits with the Blackberry form factor. I’ll concede that. Oh ok, and it’s made to fit into the same niche as Blackberrys do. That doesn’t mean the Nokia E71 is any less of a phone because of that, though. The QWERTY keyboard takes messaging to a whole new dimension, whether it be email or text messaging, and I found it really nice to use, after a learning curve that can be measured in minutes. It’s laid out cleverly, software-wise, too, with a new home key (with a house on it) replacing the old yin-yang menu key previous Symbian-powered Nokia phones have had. The E71 also lets you have two separate home screens, one for work, where you can set it to show emails and tasks, for example, and one for home, where you could set it to show camera and music shortcuts.

All of this is possible, because it’s powered by Symbian S60, making it easily as powerful as its more famous Nseries siblings, and although the screen’s smaller than on those, the fact it’s in landscape mode makes it incredibly appealing to look at, in a quirky kinda way. Kinda like Alyson Hannigan. And the fact I always preferred Alyson Hannigan over Sarah Michelle Gellar in Buffy should be a massive hint that I’m pretty much assured to prefer this to the N96.

Not sure how well it holds its own against the Nokia 5800, though…

Anyway, the Nokia E71 is powerful, it looks gorgeous, it’s got a 3 megapixel camera that really does produce some brilliant photos, and it’s downright lovely in every respect. Oh, and shockingly thin for a phone this powerful.

Ok, granted, it might not have the big star power of the Nokia N97, or be as all-round, jaw-droppingly awesome as the N97, but you can guarantee it’s a damn sight cheaper, and if you get a Nokia E71, I’m tellin’ ya now, you will not regret it. Just ask my compadre Gary. He’s just got one, and his only regret is letting me have a look at it, as I’m now refusing to give it back…

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the third chapter in out iPhone Killers season! After its successive victories against the LG Renoir and Samsung Pixon, the iPhone’s quoted as being ready to take on its next challenger.

Well, actually, it was quoted as saying, “Hut, hut, hut, bring it on, raaarrgh,” but you get the idea.

Today, though, the iPhone’s really got its work cut out for it, because it’s taking on a brand new phone that’s already shipped a million handsets. Not bad when it only went on sale in the UK last Friday (yes, ok, it sold most of those overseas, since it got released in places like Russia before the end of 2008). It’s one of the most anticipated mobile phones of all-time, and everyone has been talking about since it was announced by Nokia…

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for its toughest fight yet, as the iPhone takes on the Nokia 5800!

New Sony Ericsson phones

New Sony Ericsson phones to be unveiled at MWC ‘09
Time for a preview, now, of the most important event in the mobile world’s calendar; in February, it’s going to be time, once again, for the Mobile World Congress, the big event where loads of new mobile phones get unveiled, and that leaves me in a paralytically happy state for, usually, about three weeks. MWC is where the big names traditionally bring out the big guns, and it would appear that Sony Ericsson have a few new devices up their sleeves, as well, according to the SEMC Blog. Since last year’s MWC entailed them launching not just a new phone, but two entirely new ranges of phones (G-Series and Xperia), I reckon it’s fair to say we could be in for some good stuff, come February.

The question is, though, what can we expect?

Well, let’s start with what’s already been leaked. First up, there’s the W935, a new budget-conscious Walkman phone, that shares a design heritage with the little, cute and brilliant, Sony Ericsson F305. The big leak so far, though, has been the Sony Ericsson C903, the newly developed, Cyber-Shot-powered baby sibling of the C905. Taking a similar sliding design to its big brother, it packs in, this time, a 5 megapixel camera, along with all the Cyber-Shot goodness we’ve come to expect (Smile Shutter, Face Recognition, image stabiliser and reportedly a xenon flash). So, it’s basically a slightly more budget-conscious reimagining of their top-end C905.

The interesting news, though, is that the SEMC Blog reckons they won’t be the only mobile phones that Sony Ericsson unveil at the MWC, and I’m inclined to agree. I’ll eat my own conkers if we don’t get to see a new Xperia-branded phone, quite frankly, but the question is whether it’ll be another Windows Mobile behemoth, like the Sony Ericsson X1, the first hints of an Android-powered Xperia phone or even, feasibly, a Symbian-powered Xperia phone. Maybe it’ll be an update of the panels interface for their next Xperia phone? Or maybe it’ll be built on Windows Mobile 6.5?

Or, conceivably (and probably), it’ll make me annoyed that I got the X1 and didn’t wait for something more powerful?

No-one knows for sure, but just like last year, I’m already getting excited!

Zumba - the totally voice-controlled mobile phone

Anyone who’s been following our iPhone Killers series will know there’s an ever-increasing number of slick interfaces out there, designed to give a rich, visual experience to your mobile phone. Well, how about a phone that forgets about a slick visual interface altogether, and has you do everything with your voice (which, even I have to admit, is potentially cooler even than that charging puck thing you can get for the Palm Pre)?

That’s the idea behind the new Zumba, from IA Technology, a phone so top secret that when the BBC did a report about it, they couldn’t show it working, or discuss how it worked, and apparently, they could only show a dummy…

It should be noted that many bloggers, myself included, translate “so secret we can’t show you it working” and “too top secret to say how it works” as “it doesn’t work”…

Crashing on… I will say this: if its new, completely reliable and sophisticated voice recognition system is as good as they say, it could be pretty cool. The phone works by pulling the back of it off, and finding that the back is actually an earpiece. Slot that on, and the phone connects you to the Zumba Lumba web portal, where all your details, and contacts, and suchlike, are stored. Then, you can call anyone in your phonebook just by speaking their name, and presumably speak a number to the phone, and tell it to dial. That, though, is basically just voice dialling. That ain’t full voice control.

Ok, then, how about if it reads your texts back to you? And in order to compose a text, you just say your message into the earpiece, and the phone writes the text for you. That’s quite clever, that. And just to show it not at all in action, here’s the video report from the BBC.

No idea if it’s really going to work or not, since they won’t show us, but hey, if anyone’s gonna do it, it’s a company who appears to be (since they make ejector seats and protection systems) Q-Branch out the Bond films.

Nokia N97 to hit the UK in March

Now here’s an interesting story for anybody who’s eagerly waiting to get their hands on the Nokia N97. Mobile Whack are reporting that the phone is due to be released in the UK, via Play.com, on March 31st, a full two months before the rumoured June release date…

If that’s an accurate date, then ooh, that’s rather exciting, as it means you, me and everybody else won’t have to wait as long to play with Nokia’s new QWERTY-toting, Symbian-powered monster. Nokia are clearly on the rampage in the touchscreen market, given that the Nokia 5800 will be out soon, as well. And with the Nokia N97 aiming to kill the opposition in the top-end market, they’ve pretty much covered all their bases. Well, except for an ultra-cheap touchscreen phone, but be honest, can you imagine that ever happening?

However, there’s always a wild card in these situations, and it may well turn out that the Nokia N97 has its work cut out for it, if it wants to make it big, because there’s another mobile phone on the way, that could well put a damper on Nokia’s party. Yup, the N97 is going to have some sizeable competition in the shape of the Palm Pre, and it’s entirely feasible that it could nick a massive chunk of the Finnish kid’s market share. It’s going to be a close-run thing, though, I reckon, since they’re both stunningly nice mobile phones.

Let’s not forget, though, that Nokia are well-known. Palm, here in the UK, really aren’t. And as we all know, the brand name on a product can make or break it. Just look at the Apple iPod (whichever variant of it takes your fancy). In my opinion, a massively substandard music player, since the sound quality is, and I say this as a musician and sound-engineer-type-bloke, absolutely god-awful. And yet, it outsells every other mp3 player on the market, all because of that brand name.

So, even if the Palm Pre turns out to be vastly superior (and part of me is thinking it really, definitely will do), I reckon the Nokia N97 will get the lion’s share of the interest, because, well, it’s a Nokia, innit…?

Palm Pre To Be A Vodafone Exclusive Phone

Palm Pre to be a Vodafone-exclusive phone in the UK? :
An interesting news story’s popped up on the Mobile Industry Review, today, about the upcoming Palm Pre, that new touchscreen wonder phone that’s all set to single-handedly bring Palm back from the nearly-dead. Allegedly, the Pre is all set to infiltrate the market in exactly the same way as the iPhone, the T-Mobile G1 and the Blackberry Storm (especially the Blackberry Storm… you’ll see why in a minute…) before it.

According to rumours, the Palm Pre is going to be an exclusive on Vodafone, when it’s released, just like the Blackberry Storm was.

Of course, however, that’s not confirmed yet, but when you consider that it seems to be the way the market’s going nowadays, it’d be hardly surprising if it does turn out to be true. And to be honest, it makes sense for both companies involved that the Palm Pre be an exclusive phone. From Palm’s point of view, they get a network partner who’s absolutely dedicated to pushing their phone. From Vodafone’s point of view, they get a phone that a shedload of people want, but can’t get anywhere else.

Oh, and of course, it’s their opportunity to get right the noses of both O2 and T-Mobile, and say, “iPhone? G1? Pah! We’ve got the Blackberry Storm and the Palm Pre! Have some o’ that!”

Tell me you wouldn’t like to see them say it…

So, the final step, and the big question, is whether the Palm Pre, the very definition of a comeback kid, can take on the might of the Nokia N97, which is also on the way, soon, and has that Finnish brand name on it to tempt in more people. Only time will tell…
