With production of the SLR McLaren due to end next May Mercedes has come up with a spectacular farewell edition.
When the last SLR leaves the Woking production line next year work will start on a strictly limited run of this: the SLR Stirling Moss.
New SLR Stirling Moss
SLR Stirling MossStripped of roof, windows and doors this is the most extreme SLR yet and harks back to the 300SLR racing car in which Stirling Moss famously won the Mille Miglia, Targa Florio and other sportscar races back in 1955. The look is radically different from any previous SLR too, the dramatic lines clearly influenced by the 50s racer.
With 650hp and a top speed of 217mph this is wind in the hair motoring of an extreme variety - without even a windscreen you're going to want to wear a helmet for anything other than low speed cruising around Monte Carlo. Which, with an asking price of 750000 Euros, is probably where many will end up.
Just 75 will be made and only what Mercedes describes as 'the most loyal SLR customers' will be given the opportunity to buy one. A totally revised interior including a numbered plaque with an engraved signature by Moss himself underlines the car's exclusivity, this special edition being Mercedes' farewell to the SLR.
Although heavily revised the SLR's distinctive airbrake remains, a nod to the original racecar which also had such a device in its ill-fated drive at the 1955 Le Mans race. A variable tonneau cover system also means owners can set the SLR Stirling Moss up as a single-seater, again just like the original racer.
